When I came back from Ireland in the summer of 2019, I felt called to create a new series. Inspired by the emerald greens and blue hues of the water, I decided to try something new with my sculptures. Instead of using pigments layer upon layer, I grabbed acrylic paint and metallic leaf instead. I really fell in love with that country. It has been on my travel list for so long, I’m actually wondering why I waited so many years to visit! Especially Achill grabbed my heart. The silence in the hills, the wildflowers, the sound of waves crushing against the cliffs. It was amazing.
While I sure want to go back, there are other countries on my list too which are calling me (Up next: Norway!) so until then, I can revel in the memories and the energy of this place, using it in my sculptures and paintings. Maybe even in my ceramics too but I don’t want to get ahead of myself 🙂 so for now… the Ireland vibe stays with my new series: Hy-Brasil.
Brasil, also known as Hy-Brasil or several other variants, is a phantom island said to lie in the Atlantic Ocean west of Ireland. Irish myths described it as cloaked in mist except for one day every seven years, when it becomes visible but still cannot be reached.
